Friends Forever
Michael and Donna Coy are a husband and wife duo known as Friends Forever. They have been playing in the Albuquerque area, both as a duo and with other groups, since the early 90s. As a duo (sometimes joined by friends) they play and sing Folk tunes and songs from various traditions such as Celtic, Gospel, Old-Time, Bluegrass, Cowboy, and traditional Southwestern, as well as Singer/Songwriter Covers and Originals. With a focus on vocal harmonies, they accompany themselves on guitar, fiddle, mandolin, octave mandolin, and bodhran (Irish drum).
Mel Minter wrote in the November 2015 edition of Albuquerque the Magazine: "The folk revival of the 1960s launched the careers of many stars, spurred the sales of guitars and banjos, and it set two people at opposite ends of the country on paths that would intersect at the alter several decades later. Donna and Michael Coy, married in 1993 and well known as Friends Forever Duo, can count Peter, Paul, and Mary, Leadbelly, and Bob Dylan, among others, as their matchmakers and inspiration."
In 2012 Donna won the vocal contest at the Southwest Traditional and Bluegrass Music Festival in Santa Fe. Michael won first place at the 2017 New Mexico Music Awards in the Children’s category for his original song, Great Grandpa, included on his solo CD project of that year called Southwest Sojourn. He also recorded an album with Art Garcia in 2013 called Halfway to Nowhere, which received 5 NMMA nominations. As a duo Michael and Donna recently produced a CD called Friends Forever, from a series of earlier recordings. They are hoping to produce a gospel CD soon.
