Coronado's Entrada Coronado organized an expedition of almost 300 Spanish soldiers and 1,000 Indian allies to look for the Seven Cities of Gold. They set out from Compostela along the west coast of Mexico on February 23, 1540.
Coronado retraced the steps that Fray Marcos and the Moor, Estevan, had taken a year earlier. When they reached Zuni, they discovered that the pueblos were made of adobe and that there was no gold. The Zuni resisted the Spaniards, but could not defend themselves against their guns and armor. Although the Spaniards did not find gold, they took the Zuni's supply of corn.
