History of Estancia
Estancia appeared on early maps long before it became an early settlement. It is a Spanish word translating to large estate, cattle ranch or resting place and has always been identified with the spring there. The Plains tribes used the area and would often stop at the spring for several days to a week and rest – where water and grass were plentiful.

Estancia became more than a camping spot when the Santa Fe Central Railroad was built from Santa Fe to Torrance.  Because water was plentiful, the railroad company built a 50,000 gallon elevated tank at the springs and a railroad supply house, repair shops and a roundhouse.
